Lakay MMA Tap Team Incorporated

We are a Mixed Martial Arts organization founded by accomplished Wushu fighters. Our vision is to develop a pool of talented athletes from the Cordillera Administrative Region and its environs.

The organization provides an opportunity for its members to further hone their skills and discipline to become responsible and excellent fighters. Since its inception in 2006, Lakay MMA Tap Team managed to produce and maintain an outstanding record of wins in the local, national and international arena. We organized several competitios in its base, the Benguet Province and Baguio City. Hence, we continue to grow and promote the sport in the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play.

Team Lakay

Team Lakay is the brainchild of Marquez Sangiao, head coach of the Cordillera chapter in Baguio for Wushu, and a seasoned martial artist with experience in kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, and Jiu-Jitsu. Coach Mark is also a martial arts instructor at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) as well as a coach for Wushu at the University of the Cordilleras, both in Baguio City. Known also as "The Machine", Mark has competed in local and international events including Fearless, another type of mixed martial arts competition, and the Asian and SEA Games.

Lakay Gyms

Training centers handled by any of the Team Lakay are called Lakay Gyms. These are home to mostly students and young professionals who are passionate about learning the art of Wushu, Jiu Jitsu or overall fitness. Click here for more information.

Wushu is both an exhibition and a full-contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. It was created in the People's Republic of China in an attempt to nationalize the practice of traditional martial arts. Wushu literally means, "martial arts". It is formed from "wu", martial or military, and "shu", meaning discipline, skill or method. Wushu is composed of two disciplines, Xanda and Tao Lu.

Xanda (sometimes called Sanshou or Lei Tai) is a modern fighting method and sport influenced by traditional Chinese boxing and wrestling called Shuai Chiao and other Chinese grappling techniques such as Qin Na. It has all the combat aspects of Wushu.

Tao lu

Tao lu involves patterns and maneuvers for which competitors are judged and awarded points according to specific rules. The forms comprise basic movements (stances, kicks, punches, balances, jumps, sweeps and throws) based on aggregate categories and traditional Chinese martial art style and can be adjusted to highlight ones strength during a competition.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

MMA is a full-contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques to be used in competitions. These techniques come from a mixture of martial arts, traditional and/or contemporary. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques while standing and while on the floor. Such competition allows martial artists of different disciplines to compete.

MMA is classified as a combat sport that stressed the ideals of fair play and respect for your opponent. However, people still quite often label it as vicious or brutal.

Regardless of MMAs reputation, the competition is relatively safe. Due to the rules and regulations imposed and the tough mental and physical conditioning of MMA fighters, there has never been a fatality directly linked to any tournament. People who practice MMA report to have felt and looked healthier. But there are more than the physical aspect of the sport. While many think of martial artists as violent, in the mainstream it is used as self-defense. It does not encourage violence. On the contrary, MMA teaches the learner to control anger and how to use self-control and restraint.
